My host sister took me to a ceviche restaurant. Her younger sister’s boyfriend owns (or works?) there. This is what I ate.
This is some kind of fish soup. I think a lot of flavors used in Peru include cilantro, because the first meal my host family gave me also tasted as if it had cilantro in it as well. It tasted cilantro-y which is good because I LOVE cilantro. I basically copied my sister who added hot peppers, lemon, and corn to the coup. If you love seafood, you’d love this, but let me tell you, something about the corn in Peru is fantastic. I could eat the corn in the background of this soup picture alll day and not get tired of it. I think we actually had about five bowls of just the corn to eat.
My host sister ordered the same ceviche dish as me while my host younger brother ordered fried chicken (?) If I remember correctly. The juice pictured with the main dish is a lemonade which I found to be very good.
Ceviche was in the main dish. It is basically sashimi marinated in a sauce, which, like I said earlier above, tastes very cilantro-y. The top is covered with an onion salad. My dish came with some sweet potatos which helped balanced the sourness of the ceviche and some type of bean pictured on the bottom left corner. I have no idea what it is called but it seems to be popular in Peru, because I’ve also had the same type of bean in a dried snack form, bought from the store.
I managed to finish the entire dish, but I’m not sure I’d have it again. For sure, the ceviche is good, because for someone who is very used to the Japanese type sashimi (just the raw fish, maybe dipped in soy sauce and wasabi), this was a whole different world. But, for my first real Peruvian dish in Peru, I give it 5 stars.
Try it and tell me what you think!
